What is the history of Valentine's Day?

Valentine's Day is originally a Catholic celebration that always takes place on February 14th. The tradition can be traced all the way back to the 1500s. Over the years, the day has been celebrated in a variety of different ways, but today it often involves the purchase of gifts, cards and love letters for the one you have your eye on.

1. Valentine's Day for those who love speed and excitement

Do you want to impress a partner who loves an adrenaline rush and wind in their hair? Flex your competitive streak with your partner and get laughter and joy in the bargain. Bergen Gokart offers an exciting track over two levels that is guaranteed to get your heart racing.

Do you get an even bigger rush from heights? Bergen Klatresenter has indoor climbing halls in both Fana and Laksevåg neighbourhoods. Belaying is a great activity to reinforce trust and team work in your relationship.

5. Valentine's Day for history buffs

Bergen is one of Norway's most historic cities. Bring your date on a historical walk through the streets of Bergen. A trip to historic Bryggen is a must, but you should also visit the Gamle Bergen Museum where you will find houses from Bergen that date back to the 1720s. The open-air museum is closed during the winter months, making its cobblestoned lanes a lovely and quiet spot for a romantic stroll through time.

Where to eat: There are few restaurants in Bergen that have more history in their walls than venerable Wesselstuen. It has long been a favourite haunt for local legends and has over the years become a landmark in Bergen city centre.

5.Valentinsdagen for historieelskeren

Her får dere gå i fred.
