"The Gingerbread Town is one of Bergen's most magical Christmas traditions," says Yngve Hansen, General Manager of De Bergenske, is a family of hotels and restaurants.
De Bergenske is a family-run hotel and therefore has an extra love for the city - in addition to having a full overview of the traditions in Western Norway's capital. If you check in at one of its hotels, including Bergen Børs Hotel and Skostredet Hotel, both of which are located right in the centre, you will get the best tips on what is happening in the city. And during the holiday season, the Gingerbread Town is a must.
"Gingerbread Town has a long and established tradition in Bergen, and is really worth a visit, both for children and adults," says Hansen.
Each year, local school classes, kindergartens, private individuals, organisations, and companies all help bake and assemble the Gingerbread Town. Together, a miniature version of the city of Bergen is created, entirely made of gingerbread. The tradition has taken place every December since 1991.
The town consists of houses, churches, imaginative fantasy buildings, trains, and lights, and the experience of seeing it is a real Norwegian Christmas tradition.
The Gingerbread Town is located in a different place each year and has been exhibited at the KODE Permanenten art museum, among other places. You can find out where it will be held this year on Visit Bergen's website.
